My top 5 essential oils

Updated: Jan 16

Essential oils play a pretty big part in my life. Besides the fact that I think they are just super interesting, I use them quite often in a bath (often diluded in coconutoil but any fatty plant oil would work) or in the diffuser. Also, they are great during meditation or (obviously) a massage.

My mother used to use them even when we were quite young so you could say I grew up with them.

Back when I was really small I often was carried on my mom's back (you know, wrapped up in a sling) while she would be vacuuming. She would always put a few drops of oil on the filter of the vacum so the whole room would smell nice.

By now I accumulated quite a collection of oils, about 30 bottles at the moment but here I will tell you about my top 5 essentil oils. It would be a pretty good start for your own collection and if I could only use 5 oils from now on, this would be them.

The first spot goes to lavender (Lavendula angustifolia). Even though the rest of them aren't in any particular order, levender is for sure my number 1.

If I could only keep 1 oil for the rest of my life, it would be lavender.

Je can pretty much use it for anything. It is calming and relaxing so it's perfect for getting a good sleep or in stressful periods. For me it works well with headaches, it works calming on the skin (so perfect when you have been in the sun a little to long) and I just love the scent of it. There are a ton of different ways to use lavender oil but I won't get into it too much right now.

Second on my list is "Thieves". This is a blend by Young Living existing of clove (Syzygium aromaticum), lemon (Citrus limon), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). This oil has the most wonderfull wintery (and autumnal) scent, which is one of the reasons I love to diffuse it when we are heading towards the colder months. Besides, the oils in the blend are known for their purifing properties, which is not a bad thing in the colder months.

The oil is inspired on thieves in the 5th century in France who would rob the sick and dying. The story goes that one of them was a pharmasist with a pretty exstensive knoledge of herbs who made a mix to rub on themselves so they wouldn't get sick. That mix is said to contain clove and rosemary along other herbs.

In French hospitals rosemary was used for a while because of it's antiseptic properties.

Another favorite is peppermint (Mentha piperita) oil. It has the most wonderful fresh scent and works great with headaches. Besides, it has great cooling properties which is nice when you are hot or have spend too much time in the sun. It also can help you to keep focused, so when you feel sleepy but have to do something, a few drops in the diffuser might just do the trick.

Then there is frankincense (Boswellia carterii). Besides the lovely scent, it's one of my favorites for meditation. One or two drops on a piece of wood, pinecone or cottonround and putting that next to you works like a charm. The scent isn't overpowering but what I (and several others) noticed, is that the deeper you get into your meditation, the better you will be able to smell it.

And last but not least, Lemon (Citrus limon). I like to use this oil for cleaning. It has a beautiful fresh scent but is also pretty good ad getting rid of dirt. (I managed to get rid of light lime deposits using a solution of apple cider vinegar, water and a few drops of lemon oil.) Just keep in mind that lemon oil will eat right through plastic so you don;t want to use it on any plastic surfaces. It also works really well to get rid of nasty smells (maybe aftr cooking?) and the aroma has uplifting properties.

So there you have it, my 5 favorite essential oils.

PS: Please don't use essential oils directly on the skin. Whenever you want to use them on skin, always dilute your oils.
